Fenrir was the first child of Loki, a giant wolf, who was predicted to bring great evil upon the gods. It was said that the Great Wolf was to slay Odin in battle. Believing that Fenrir couldn’t be allowed to grow up unchecked he was brought to live in Asgard. Of all the gods, only Tyr was brave enough to approach him, so he cared and fed Fenrir as he grew to an enormous size. They realized that they would never be able to control Fenrir, so the gods devised a plan to contain him. They tried twice to bind him with the strongest chains they could find, but Fenrir broke through them easily. Desperate, Odin sent a messenger to the dwarves asking them to craft something to withstand the strength of Fenrir. The result of this was Gleipnir. Fenrir was smart, he knew that this new chain was magic of some design and didn’t trust the gods. He told them that one of the gods had to put their hand in his mouth before he consented to be bound again. Tyr was that God. When Fenrir realized that he couldn’t escape the new bonds and that the gods had no intention of setting him free, he bit down of Tyr’s wrist, severing his hand from his body. So Fenrir Remained Bound and the Gods rested easy.
