In the winter of 2018, the co-founder of the shop and I sat down and decided that this was something that we wanted to take on. We were both avid readers and bought many candles from some fantastic stores, but we wanted to try for ourselves.
After 5 months of paperwork and endless hours spent on video chats we finally opened up the shop in June of 2019 on Etsy. We started with glass jars and only had 2 subscription boxes. The shop did fairly well in the beginning but started to drag a bit as the fall came upon us. That November my business partner stepped down and I took fuller owner ship of the company.
In January of 2020 the shop made it's come back. Rebranded, New Products and it even had its own website. The candles were made in tins now and we not only carried the two subscription boxes, we also released a new mini-set each month and several single candles.
The first several months were alright, everyone was getting used to the new layout and it seemed like we would hit an uptick in following. And then the Coronavirus hit and threw me for a loop.
But, luckily for me, I have a resilient support team and some amazing followers and I could finally start making the candles that I wanted to make. It was a leap of faith because they were themes that weren't all that common for candles and the run went shockingly well.
I have learned so much from this business, but the biggest lesson would be to always trust your gut. Even when things seem impossible.
